Philosophy

Phoenix Programs embraces a treatment philosophy that engages clients in a community which fosters self-responsibility and motivation for change. Using Motivational Enhancement techniques, we empower individuals to take control of their own recovery. This is achieved by creating new or strengthening existing linkages within the community, for example, a couple attending reunification counseling or an individual connecting with a childhood church family. The ultimate goal is a strong recovery-oriented system of care that supports a client throughout treatment and stays in place as an individual prepares to disengage from the treatment center at discharge.

“All of the groups were extremely helpful in the rehabilitation and habilitation process. Never once had I not left a group without a positive thought or feeling that I could turn into action concerning recovery from a problem that I was dealing with or facing.” – a grateful recipient

When surveyed, 84% of our clients said that the treatment programs at Phoenix Programs gave them the right tools to maintain their recovery, and 77% of clients said that the treatment they received at Phoenix Programs was superior to other programs that they they had experienced.

Best Practices

Phoenix Programs values and models evidence-based treatment practices in all of its treatment and prevention programming. Evidence-based practices that are central to the ‘Phoenix Approach’ are the Modified Therapeutic Community (MTC), Assertive Community Therapy (ACT), and the Adolescent Community Reinforcement Approach (A-CRA). A new intiative, Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) has recently been launched in partnership with the University of Missouri Hospital and Clinics.

Phoenix Programs has received the following awards and recognitions:

Client Satisfaction

We are committed to ensuring that our clients receive individualized treatment to meet their unique needs. We use client satisfaction surveys to help us understand how clients experience treatment.

“I am a client at Phoenix by choice, I love all the staff who have been wonderful. You can talk with anyone about any issues and never be judged. Thank you.” - client

Outcomes

Our philosophy, adherence to best practice models, and listening to our clients, has created a treatment atmosphere that produces the best possible outcome for our clients, their families, and their communities.

Outcomes data is collected from individuals six months after their initial intake. We ask: “how is sobriety, what is work and family life like now, are you more connected to recovery supports, and is your legal status and health in better condition than it was?” All of the responses to these questions are put together to guage how well the treatment at Phoenix Programs helped change an individual’s life for the better. The collection tool that we use in collecting all this data is a standard instrument (GPRA Core Client Outcomes tool) which is widely used in all states. Phoenix Programs’ data indicates that we have significant impact on our clients. Six months after leaving treatment 72% of clients report being abstinent from drugs and alcohol, 83% report no new negative social consequences as a result of drug / alcohol use, and 89% of clients report that they are connected to self-help or peer support groups in the community.

Phoenix Programs makes outcome reports available to funders, donors, and community stakeholders regularly because we know that positive outcomes help clients and their families have confidence that they are getting best treatment possible.

Student and Adults Learn How to Make Good Brains Great

The Phoenix Programs, Inc., the University of Missouri Interdisciplinary Neuroscience Program (INP) and Oakland Junior High school are teaming up to observe Brain Awareness Week March 14-18 at the school. The goal will be to inform students and adults of new research on adolescent brain development and offer practical coping skills to enhance family and school connections.

Two of three events scheduled for this outreach will be for Oakland students only: a Tabletop Quiz on brain factoids on Monday, March 14th from 10:45am-1pm and a workshop for honors students from 12:00 – 1:00PM Friday, March 18. A presentation by the Dr. Beversdorf, MD and faculty member of the Interdisciplinary Neuroscience Program and Heather Harlan, Prevention Specialist from Phoenix Programs will present on the topic, “A Great Brain is More than Good Luck,” March 15, 6-7pm in cafeteria. This event will be open to students and adults in the community.

Principal at Oakland Kim Presko noted, “Knowing and understanding how your brain grows and functions during adolescence is empowering information for students at this age and anyone who lives or works with teenagers.”

This event marks the first of a collaborative effort between Phoenix Programs and the University INP to improve the brain education in the Columbia community. Phoenix Programs is a behavioral health center which focuses on individuals seeking long-term recovery from substance use disorders. The INP is graduate program at MU which offers graduate students the opportunity to train for careers in teaching and research in neuroscience.

Brain Awareness Week is an international campaign that was created in 1996 by the Dana Foundation, a philanthropic organization of neuroscientists devoted to improving public awareness of the progress and promise of brain research. According to the Foundation’s listing of events in Missouri, Oakland is the only public school in the state to participant in Brain Awareness Week.

Deborah Beste, Executive Director of Phoenix Programs, Inc, said, “Junior high students, adults, prevention and neuroscience—it’s an unconventional but compelling combination. Everybody will learn something.”

For more information about Brain Awareness Week, visit: www.dana.org. For questions and more information about the events at Oakland Junior High, contact Phoenix Programs 875-8880 or the school 214-3220.

Recently at an education group at Phoenix Programs individuals seeking long term recovery took time to think about situations that might occur during the coming holidays that could TEAR at their recovery (Traditions, Expectations, Attitudes, Routines).

Here you see a photo of the list generated by the group.

Many reported the holidays were a source of stress for them for reasons unique to recovery. Some of those challenges were lack of support for recovery, expectations to use or drink with friends or family, questions about how to celebrate without using, and having to choose between attending support group meetings or family gatherings.

Most of the stressors the participants named were challenging holiday situations faced by most individuals and families—in recovery or not: being around family members you might not enjoy, unrealistic expectations around the holidays, overspending, overeating, lack of sleep, grief, loneliness, and isolation.

The group members discussed coping skills, strategies for moving forward in their recoveries and focused on anticipating how to stay “safe” if they found themselves wanting to use or drink. Group participants spent time listing self-care routines that could be essential but are often neglected during the holidays. This can add to our levels of stress. These routines included adequate sleep, exercise, nutritious food, staying hydrated, attending support meetings, doing volunteer work and choosing positive family/friends with whom you want to spend time.

You don’t have to be in recovery for a substance use situation for the holidays to be stressful—we all can use positive strategies for coping.

What are YOUR strategies for staying on track in your life during the holidays?

Please share with the Phoenix community—we’d like to compile a list.
